NEW DELHI

Attivisti del Bharatiya Kisan Union and the Indian

had been broken.

NEW DELHI: Activists of the Bharatiya Kisan Union and the Indian Coordination Committee of Farmers’ Movement held a demonstration on Parliament Street here on Wednesday in protest against the United

Progressive Alliance Government’s decision to revive the World Trade Organisation negotiations.

Led by BKU leader Mahendra Singh Tikait, farmers from across the country were addressed by presidents of various State units. Some protesters were detained at the Parliament Street police station and later released.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the two organisations said the farming community was agitated over the unnecessary push by the UPA Government to
conclude the Doha Round by 2010: “India’s negotiating stance was not even debated in the last session of Parliament. Since the UPA came back to power
early this year, it is showing undue haste in pushing through trade deals.”

Accusing the Government of not showing any concern for millions of small and marginal farmers whose livelihood was at stake in these negotiations, the
letter said: “At this time of financial and economic crisis, even the developed countries are prioritising economic revival at home. But India has unilaterally taken over the task to re-energise the Doha talks and
consequently undertake massive tariff reduction to allow cheap subsidised imports from the developed world. India’s readiness to conclude the Doha
Round will have far-reaching consequences for the country’s economy and for the survival of millions of small and marginal polity farmers.” The organisations said the Government’s decision to host the two-day “WTO Mini-Ministerial” in Delhi from Wednesday was a signal that the Doha impasse had been broken.
